The Amazing Japanese

THE GOODNESS OF OUR NEIGHBORS
These Japanese are truly an amazing people, in their patience in difficulty, and how they band together to solve problems and care for each other. Even though I have lived among them for a quarter century, I feel that I as an American still have so much to learn from them. In my research on the church here I feel they have so much to teach us especially the church about genuine community. The last place I lived before I came to Japan was the City of Chicago. Chicagoans are wonderful (and I am a proud one) but I could not see them deal with this disaster without going stir crazy. For example, there have been no reports of looting or crime increases. People are not hoarding food or supplies or price gouging for them.
As all of you well know the Japanese are incredibly intelligent especially with technology. This whole disaster has contributed to their humility in their pride of Japanese superior technology, something God has humbles the US with the Challenger disaster 25 years ago. But as Christians our confidence is not in science and technology, none of that did much any good in the wake of this disaster. Our confidence and hope must be in God. Pray for those shaken by all these events. May they be drawn to the only one true Hope, God the one who saves men from this broken world (Ps 68:18-20).
